Textile "Trees": Contemplative Stitching with Loving Kindness with Mirka Knaster

In this in-person workshop, we will create small Korean-style pouches to hang from actual branches. Traditionally, in Korea, while making something for someone you care about, you stitch while holding positive thoughts for that person, whether for a happy marriage, successful career, strong health, and so on. We start with squares of fabric (sagak). There are many options: interior design samples from FabMo, remnants from other projects, Korean ramie, cloth you’ve hand-dyed, felt, organza you’ve painted, even decorative paper. Mix and match colors, patterns, textures or stick to one theme. To close the 4 sides into a dangling pouch, the thread can match or contrast the fabric color. If you like, add beads on the outside and/or a message of good wishes on the inside. In Korea, a larger pouch (jumeoni) might include a gift of money for a child.

Depending on your preference, the pouches can hang from a branch you attach to a wall or hang from a ceiling. Or several branches can fit into a jar, vase, or tall basket. You can also dangle the pouches from metal or wood as a mobile.

No experience necessary.

SUPPLY LIST:

All materials are provided, but you may want to bring the following to create even more personalized mobiles:

  • Branches to start creating your mobile

  • Special fabrics and threads you may want to use

  • if you bring your own fabric, you may want to cutout 5-8 squares of fabric: cut several sizes, but nothing smaller than 3” (on all sides).

Art offers us moments of now, in which we let go of the past and the future, let go of the constant stream of data rushing through us. It offers an opportunity to pause and be still, leaving behind, even if only briefly, the tumult and busyness of everyday life. Whether we're viewing or creating, art has the power to provide not only an experience of aesthetic pleasure, but also a refuge where it's possible to be fully present and know the timelessness of serenity. A moment of inner quiet in the middle of things can shift our consciousness and body chemistry and alter the tone of our day…Learn more about Mirka here.

From sitting on the floor, untangling my mom's fair aisle yarns at age 4, via knitting on her lap, then trying almost every technique available in elementary school through 10 sweaters in high school, it brought me to enjoy fiber arts more than ever after our daughters were born. I have made my own designs and patterns for many years and most patterns are stored in my head or on little note pads around the fiber art studio.

I enjoy all sorts of fiber work; knit, crochet, needle point, hairpin lace, sewing, but most of all, I love to do felting, especially art felting…Learn more about Randi here.

Join us for a special evening at the Museum, where art and inspiration converge! This fundraiser features the incredible works of Lilian Mao, a talented artist with a rich background in embroidery design, documentary filmmaking, holistic culinary arts, and positive living.

Beginning her career in 1990, Lilian studied documentary filmmaking at the SFSU Film Department as a visiting scholar and spent the next ten years in the Bay Area filming various television documentaries. In 2008, after being diagnosed with diabetes, she devoted herself to researching a natural low-carb healthy diet and transitioned to a career as a private chef, often teaching cooking classes. Later, in 2010, Lilian transformed her life experiences into a vibrant expression of creativity, culminating in her stunning "wood art paintings," created in collaboration with folk craft artisans in Yiwu, China. After overcoming cancer and kidney failure in 2018, Lilian is now an online columnist committed to promoting healthy living, hoping to inspire others to face their challenges with optimism.

During the event, you'll have the unique opportunity to meet Lilian, learn about her artistic process, and discover the deeper meanings behind her work. All proceeds from the sale of her pieces will help support the Museum and continue Lilian’s mission of celebrating nature's beauty, ultimately making this limited life more beautiful.

3D Magic: Creating Openwork Yarn Vessels with Mirka Knaster

  • San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles (map)

Sculpture does not have to be confined to stone, clay, or metal. By simply filling a bag with rice to form a shape, we have the basis for an orb, oval, tube, or irregular frame. After making a kind of scaffold with hemp, we will use a needle to tightly wrap yarn onto the strands to create openwork patterns (think honeycomb, cells, chambered nautilus, and other examples from nature). Alone, the vessel can be an object your child or grandchild safely handles to explore the spaces in between. It can be a toy your cat plays with or a “ball” you toss to your dog. Several vessels can be combined into a mobile over a crib or as your own “Alexander Calder” to hang in your work area or home. They can also decorate a tree or, like fruit, fill a basket. Many vessels can eventually lead to an art installation. The shapes, patterns, colors, and quantity are all up to you.

Composing in a limited space has many creative advantages for experienced as well as new art-makers. As an invitation to play with materials on hand (no shopping!), we can amaze ourselves with stuff we might otherwise toss. Working on a small scale can help break through creative blocks and stimulate new ideas to experiment with, all without performance-anxiety or a major investment of time and money.  One mini-fiber art piece (textile card) can be the beginning of a series or a way to recycle/reuse/repurpose a stash. Each participant will go home with 1-2 cards that can be finished in class or further elaborated at home. We will cut, fold, layer, arrange, glue, stitch, mark, embellish, and more to complete the composition.

Pattern Play: Tessellations with Ally Kraus

  • San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles (map)

A tessellation is a shape or tile that repeats to create a continuous pattern. They can be as simple as a square kitchen tile or as complex as M.C. Escher's art.

In this workshop, you’ll learn a super simple method to create your own "tiles" using transparent acrylic blocks and craft foam. Then, you’ll learn about the four key elements to create repeating patterns and will explore the infinite ways you can use them to quickly prototype your own designs.

I’ll guide you through a series of prompts and exercises, then we’ll have free time to create and share. Our final project will be a set of greeting cards with your favorite self-created designs. We’ll be working with paper and ink pads, but we’ll discuss how the patterns you create can be carried forward to a variety of mediums. You’ll leave with several stamps of your own design, a stack of printed patterns on paper, your gorgeous original cards, and a wealth of ideas for your next project.

All supplies and materials included.
